Mnuchin is full of Crap, Here Is Why
Mnuchin is full of Crap, Here Is Why
Here are the real facts about the minimum wage. Anything less than $15 is an absolute ripoff. Here are some real numbers that state the facts.
In 1958 Congress annual salary was $22,000, it is now $174,000. That is 7.9 times what they made in 1958. The minimum wage was 50 cents. 7.9 times that would be $3.95. If we get a $15 and hour wage, for Congress to get and equal raise they would be getting $660,000 a year. We definitely have a problem. The main one is that Congress acts like it is their money they are giving us a raise with is their own money. Sadly it is our, the taxpayers, money. Secondly they have no idea what it takes for a family of four to live for a year without holding three jobs just to break even.
A living wage for a family of four that will make a house payment, buy a car, pay for health care and the basic necessities of life would take a minimum wage of $30 per hour. If we want to see stay at home moms and families put back together, it will take about $62,000 a year. According to the Census, over 42% of American wage earners earn less than $15 an hour. That is a travesty caused by Congress kissing Big Business and the Wealthy's ass so they can stick more money in their bank accounts. Please excuse my French.
The reason we have Social Security is so the wealthy do not have to feel quilty about ripping us off. All a $15 an hour wage does is make your buying power equal to that of a 1958 minimum wage of 50 cents. A bottle of pop cost 5 cents back then. To buy the same 10 bottles of pop out of a machine today would take $15. You can look at many other things from the price of a new car, which was $3500 for a top of the line fully loaded Chevy, to the price of gas, which was 15 to 17 cents per gallon and about anything else. Even a new home costs roughly ten times what it did back then.
It is not my goal to insult Senator Mnuchin, but he needs to look at the facts before he spouts off a number that has nothing to do with the reality of life in America today.
